FAQ-Frequently Asked Questions

How is Midwifery different than OB-GYN care?

Midwives view pregnancy and birth as normal, healthy processes and provides individualized, relationship-based support throughout pregnancy, birth, and the postpartum period. Licensed Certified Professional Midwives (CPMs) in Texas provide longer prenatal visits, personalized education, and continuous support in labor. They also provide greater postpartum support for mothers and newborn care up to 6 weeks for babies. This model emphasizes evidence-based care, informed choice, and respect for the body’s natural ability to give birth, while closely monitoring the health and safety of both mother and baby. Lone Star Birth has midwives that attend births in Birth Centers, as well as at home. You can read more about the differences between midwife and OBGYN care here.

How It Differs from Hospital OB Care

Obstetricians (OB/GYNs) are physicians trained to manage high-risk pregnancies, medical complications, and surgical births within a hospital setting. Care often includes more routine interventions. Midwives specialize in healthy, low-risk pregnancies and focus on supporting physiologic birth with fewer unnecessary interventions. When medical concerns arise, midwives collaborate with physicians or transfer care to ensure families receive the appropriate level of care.

Many families choose midwifery care because it offers more time with their provider, greater continuity of care, and a supportive environment that prioritizes informed choices, comfort, and a positive birth experience.

What is included in a midwifery care package?

Midwifery care is built on time, trust, and personalized support. Care packages vary by midwife and birth center, but they are all designed to support you physically, emotionally, and educationally throughout pregnancy, birth, and the postpartum period.

  • Extended prenatal visits focused on your health, your baby, and preparing your family for birth
  • Individualized education and guidance for nutrition, pregnancy wellness, and informed decision-making
  • Routine labs, screenings, and newborn testing as indicated
  • Continuous, hands-on support during labor and birth in the comfort of your home or the birth center
  • Immediate postpartum care for both mother and baby after delivery, including all well baby checks for the first 6-weeks of life
  • Comprehensive newborn exam and breastfeeding support
  • Multiple postpartum visits for mom and baby, to ensure healing, recovery, and a smooth transition into parenthood
  • Coordination of care and trusted referrals should additional medical support ever be needed

The goal is to provide safe, evidence-based care in a calm, supportive environment, allowing birth to unfold naturally while ensuring you and your baby receive attentive, skilled care every step of the way.

Is Out-Of-Hospital (OOH) birth safe?

At your initial visit, your midwife will sit down with you to discuss your medical history, including your previous pregnancy and birth experience, as well as run labs that will give a clear picture of your health. This thorough visit will help identify any risk factors and determine if you are a good candidate for OOH birth. Home birth has been shown to be very safe for women who are low risk when attended by a qualified midwife.

Midwives are trained in birth emergencies, and may use medications to manage postpartum hemorrhage, oxygen and equipment needed for resuscitation, and can do sutures as well as newborn medications as needed. Most births go smoothly, but your midwife is prepared to act quickly if the need arises. Your midwife will have a transfer plan in place and work collaboratively with excellent OBGYN’s and local hospitals in the case that a transfer is needed.

If you are not a good candidate for OOH birth, your midwife will make a referral and help you find a trusted OBGYN in your area that can manage your care.

When should I begin midwifery care?

Midwifery care can begin as soon as your pregnancy test turns positive! If you’ve been getting care already with an OB but would like to transfer to a midwife, that can happen at any time during your pregnancy as long as you’re a good candidate for out-of-hospital birth.
